Soy clothing feels much like cashmere. It is durable like cotton, has a soft hand, and is very light. It has water wicking characteristics and is U.V. resistant. It also has antibacterial capability.
Soy was cultivated in China before 3000 B.C.E. and was classified as one of the five sacred crops. During the birth of the U.S. automobile industgry, Henry Ford used soy to make a wool-like fabric that once upholstered the seats of his cars. As well as a food source, soy can be used for fuel, plastic, paint and ink, and now clothing.
Soy fabric is an environmentally friendly fiber made from leftover by-products of soybean oil and tofu production. Soy protein is liquefied and then extruded into long, continuous fibers that are then cut and processed like any other spinning fiber. Soy is a sustainable crop that eliminates pesticide use.
It’s incredibly soft and feels similar to cashmere and serves as a leading substitue for cashmere. This also helps to diminish China's overgrazing of goats. Soy fabric is known in some countries as "soysilk" for its soft, lustrous feel.
